Ukraine: Deadly Shelling Hits Donetsk Hospital

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 04 Februari 2015 | 23.11

Up to 10 people have been killed after shells hit a hospital and other buildings in the rebel-controlled Ukrainian city of Donetsk.

The hospital in the Tekstilshchik district was damaged by shrapnel and the windows blown out.

The city's administration said it was still assessing the death toll but Ukraine's Prosecutor's Office said up to 10 people had been killed in and around the hospital.

A reporter said a body lay under a blanket in front of the building and two more dead civilians could be seen lying outside a nearby residential building.

"The firing hit in front of and behind the hospital. The children's playground and a school were hit too," local resident Denis Gladkov said.

Earlier in the day, the Ukrainian military said two of its soldiers had been killed and 18 wounded in fighting with pro-Russian forces in the previous 24 hours.

Over nine months of fighting, around 5,300 people have been killed, with a surge in the violence since the latest peace talks collapsed last weekend.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko has said he is confident the US will donate weapons to help Ukraine in its fight.

US President Barack Obama has previously opposed the idea but a senior administration official said the White House is now reviewing that policy.

Mr Poroshenko will make his case to US Secretary of State John Kerry, who is to visit Kiev later this week.

He said: "I don't have a slightest doubt that the decision to supply Ukraine with weapons will be made by the United States as well as by other partners of ours, because we need to have the capabilities to defend ourselves."

Germany and France have said that the oppose the idea of arming Kiev.

French defence minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said: "We have no intention of delivering weapons at this stage to Ukraine.

"We think that we need to find a political solution to this crisis."

EU foreign affairs head Federica Mogherini has called for an immediate truce and artillery to be withdrawn from cities in east Ukraine to allow civilians to escape from the region.

She said: "The spiral of ever increasing violence in eastern Ukraine needs to stop."

Pilot: 'Mayday Mayday Engine Flameout'

"Mayday, Mayday, engine flameout", were the pilot's final words from a stricken Taiwanese plane, according to air traffic control.

The words came moments before the TransAsia Airways plane crashed into the Keelung River, having taken off from Taipei's Songshan Airport.

Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration said 25 people were confirmed dead, 16 were injured and 17 were still missing. Thirty-one of the 58 on board were reported to be from China.

A flameout is when the fuel supply to the engine is interrupted or there are combustion problems which result in engine failure.

Twin-engined planes, however, are usually able to fly on one engine.

Meanwhile, 28 passengers appear to have had a miraculous escape, with Wu Jun-hong of Taipei's Fire Department telling reporters that children were among those rescued.

He said: "There are adults taking care of toddlers. They are safe.

"Children were rescued from the plane already. We get them out from the river using the boat."

Television footage showed survivors wearing life jackets wading and swimming clear of the wreckage, which was surrounded by rubber boats.

Others, including a young child, were taken to safety by rescuers, who could also be seen pulling carry-on luggage from an open door.

As night drew in and drizzle fell, military crews reached the scene with portable bridges and hundreds of rescue workers built docks for easier access to the wreckage.

Relatives of the victims have not yet reached the scene but some are expected to arrive on Thursday, including many flying from Beijing.

The 72-seat plane - an ATR 72-600 - was received by TransAsia last year and is one of the most popular turboprop planes in the world.

Jordan Will Have Revenge For Murdered Pilot

Jordan Will Have Revenge For Murdered Pilot

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

It's slickly produced with iconography and graphics fitting for a thriller or spy movie.

It even uses 'flashbacks' as the condemned man looks into the sky and contemplates just how justified his punishment is going to be compared to the 'crimes' he has committed.

The latest murder video from the death cult that calls itself Islamic State is revealing not for the visible 'power' of the movement but for its weakness.

Indeed the whole saga of the Japanese hostages and murder of flight lieutenant Mu'ath Al Kassasbeh begins to reveal a picture of an organisation that is losing its grip.

It has already abandoned Kobani after losing 1,200 men. It has been driven from some key towns and villages in the east of Iraq, and now it would appear to be incoherent in its kidnap policy.

Last year it made about £30m ($45m) from negotiating the release of foreigners.

It murdered Britons and Americans on camera because the shocking snuff movies of their deaths generated a level of publicity that outweighed the profits it might have raised from desperate families.

Throughout the talks aimed at swapping Sajida al Rishawi, a failed suicide bomber on death row in Amman, IS was unable to provide proof that Flt Lt Kassasbeh was alive.

Activists in Raqqa said on 8 January that they believed he had been killed.

20th Hijacker's Plan To Take Down Air Force One

By Sky News US Team

A convicted al Qaeda terrorist has testified that members of the Saudi royal family supported and financed the terror network in the 1990s, The New York Times reported.

Zacarias Moussaoui also claimed that he discussed ways to take down Air Force One with a member of the Saudi Embassy to the US.

Moussaoui, a French citizen, is described as the 20th 9/11 hijacker because he had taken flying lessons and was wired thousands of dollars, but was arrested before the attacks.

He has pleaded guilty in a US court to charges of conspiring in the 2001 attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.

His testimony - from inside a supermax prison in Colorado where he is serving his life sentence - is  part of a lawsuit filed by relatives of 9/11 victims against Saudi Arabia.

Moussaoui said that in the late 1990s he was tasked with creating a digital database of donors to al Qaeda, and he listed prominent Saudi royals.

Among them were Prince Turki al-Faisal, who served at the time as Saudi intelligence chief, and Prince Bandar Bin Sultan, a long-time ambassador to the US, the Times reported.

Moussaoui said he helped carry out a trial explosion of a bomb for a planned attack on the US Embassy in London as well as serving as a courier for Osama bin Laden, the terror mastermind who was killed in May 2011.

He claimed he discussed using a Stinger missile to shoot down Air Force One during a meeting in Afghanistan with a Saudi official of the embassy in Washington.

Moussaoui's credibility has been called into question.

At this trial in 2006 his own lawyers claimed that he was mentally ill, though he was deemed fit to stand trial.

The Saudi Embassy in Washington has denied the allegations, saying in a statement that "Moussaoui is a deranged criminal whose own lawyers presented evidence that he was mentally incompetent.

"His words have no credibility."

The statement referred to the Saudi September 11 commission, which rejected allegations that Saudi officials had funded al Qaeda.

"The September 11 attack has been the most intensely investigated crime in history and the findings show no involvement by the Saudi government or Saudi officials," it said.

There have long been claims that bin Laden, himself a member of a wealthy Saudi family, found support in his home country. The new allegations - which would offer new details, if deemed credible - were made in October but only submitted to court this week.

The new claims surfaced just a week after President Barack Obama travelled to Saudi Arabia to pay his respects after King Abdullah's death and meet the new monarch, King Salman.

Dead Prosecutor Considered Fernandez Arrest

An Argentinian prosecutor found dead from a gunshot wound had drafted a document requesting the arrest of the country's president.

Alberto Nisman's body was discovered in his bathroom just hours before he was due to appear in front of Congress.

He was expected to detail his allegations that President Cristina Fernandez agreed to protect the people behind the bombing of a Jewish community centre in 1994, a claim she denies.

Nobody has been convicted in the attack, in which 85 people were killed.

The Chief Investigator into Mr Nisman's death initially denied the existence of the arrest warrant.

It then appeared in a newspaper, forcing Viviana Fein to admit  the document had been found in a garbage bin in the dead man's apartment.

However, Ms Fein claimed that it "is not important enough to change the course of the investigation".

The papers, which were dated June 2014, were never submitted by Mr Nisman.

Instead, he chose to request the president and Foreign Minister Hector Timmerman appear in court to answer questions.

Mr Nisman believed that Ms Fernandez agreed to cover up Iranian involvement in the attack in return for beneficial trade agreements, including oil deals.

The prosecutor's death has been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories.

Initially the authorities said it was likely that he had committed suicide but his friends and supporters dismissed that claim.

He had been assigned 10 federal police officers for protection but had told a friend he did not trust them.

Ms Fernandez herself had gone so far to suggest that rogue elements of intelligence services may have been behind the attack and that his death could not be suicide.

Argentina's Congress is now debating reform of its spy agency.

A bill put forward by Ms Fernandez calls for greater presidential control over the agency and increased punishments for intelligence officers found to be acting illegally.

Six people were killed and 15 injured after a packed commuter train slammed into a car at a crossing north of New York City.

A Metro-North Railroad spokesman said the northbound train struck a Jeep Cherokee on the tracks at a railway crossing in Valhalla.

The SUV and the front carriage of the train caught fire.

The railroad crossing gates had come down on top of the SUV, which was stopped on the tracks, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.

The driver got out to look at the rear of the vehicle, then she got back in and drove forward, but was struck and killed.

Greece's Tsipras 'Optimistic' After EU Talks

Greece's prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, has said he is "very optimistic" of finding agreement over easing his country's debt burden after meeting EU chiefs in Brussels.

Mr Tsipras met European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker as he attempts to renegotiate Greece's €240bn (£180bn) bailout package and ease austerity obligations.

"I'm very optimistic after these discussions that we are in a good way," he said.

"We don't have already an agreement but we are in a good direction to find a viable agreement."

The left-wing government is aiming to end its existing arrangement with the EU, the European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund when its aid deadline expires on 28 February.

Until now, it has avoided those institutions, choosing to go direct to European governments, including meeting UK Chancellor George Osborne on Monday.

Mr Tsipras also held talks with European Council President Donald Tusk and European Parliament President Martin Schulz during his Brussels visit.

He now heads to France to meet French President Francois Hollande.

Commission chief Mr Juncker has said the EU will show flexibility over Greece's obligations but has ruled out major changes to the bail-out terms.

The EU will "adapt a certain number of our policies but we are not going to change everything," he said on the eve of the meeting.

Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis is also continuing his own push for debt concessions as he jets around the continent.

He met European Central Bank President Mario Draghi in Frankfurt in what he called a "very fruitful discussion".

"I had the opportunity to present to him our government's utter and unwavering determination that it can't possibly be business as usual in Greece," said Mr Varoufakis.

The stringent bailout measures had contributed to "a major humanitarian crisis" in his country, said the finance minister.

Sky News Economics Editor Ed Conway said the meeting was vital as the ECB was effectively providing "life support" for Greece's banking system.

"It is providing emergency liquidity assistance for a number of Greek banks," said Conway.

"If the ECB decided to withdraw that ... it would be disastrous for the Greek economy. It's essential for Greece's finance minister that he keeps that support."

Greece's austerity measures, imposed in exchange for the bailout loans, have seen its economy shrink by a quarter and unemployment rise to over 25%.

Jordan Steps Up Role In Coalition Against IS

Jordan Steps Up Role In Coalition Against IS

Jordan is stepping up its role in the US-led coalition against Islamic State – in an attempt to "undermine, degrade and eventually finish" the terror organisation which murdered one of its pilots.

King Abdullah has cut short a visit to Washington in order to fly home, as protesters in Amman demand revenge for the killing of Mu'ath Al Kassasbeh, who burned alive in a cage by IS militants.

The country executed two prisoners after the video was published online.

One of them was the Iraqi would-be suicide bomber Sajida al Rishawi, who Jordan had offered to release if Al Kassasbeh was returned safely.

But there was no forthcoming proof that the hostage was still alive, and the Jordanian military now believes that he was killed on 3 January.

Safi, the pilot's father, said he "considers Mu'ath a martyr to God", and called on the Jordanian government "to take revenge for Mu'ath's blood".

Dashcam Video Shows Fatal Plane Bridge Crash

At least 25 people have been killed and 17 are missing after a passenger jet crashed into a river in Taiwan minutes after takeoff.

There were 58 people on board the TransAsia ATR 72-600 plane when it hit a road bridge in the capital Taipei. Fifteen survived.

Video taken by a passing driver's dashcam shows the aircraft's wing clipping a taxi after managing to avoid nearby buildings.

It then disappears from view, coming down on its side in the Keelung River about 25 metres (30 yards) from the bank.

A crane has now lifted the wreckage onto the shore enabling rescuers to search the fuselage, where more bodies are expected to be found.

Wu Jun-hong, a Taipei fire department official coordinating the rescue operation, said earlier those missing were either in the fuselage or had been swept down river.

"Things don't look too optimistic," Mr Wu told reporters at the scene. "Those in the front of the plane are likely to have lost their lives."

According to reports, the plane took off from Taipei's Sungshan airport at 10.53am local time and lost contact with air traffic control two minutes later.

It was heading for the Kinmen islands, and as many as 31 passengers were Chinese, three of them children. Kinmen's airport is a common link between Taipei and China's Fujian province.
