Protester Attacks Draghi At News Conference

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

The president of the European Central Bank has been interrupted at a news conference by a protester shouting "end ECB dictatorship".

Mario Draghi was outlining the bank's latest monetary policy thinking when a lone woman jumped onto the desk above Mr Draghi and showered him with items including what looked like confetti and sheets of paper.

The bank suspended the video feed of the news conference as security officials grabbed her but she flashed a V for victory sign and smiled as two men in grey suits took her away holding her arms and legs.

Mr Draghi, who had held up his hands as protection, looked shocked but was apparently unhurt and continued his presentation shortly afterwards.

The Reuters news agency reported that activist group Femen was claiming responsibility for the incident on Twitter - although some reports suggested the protester was believed to have left the feminist movement.

Russian-Language Siri Accused Of Homophobia

A Russian-language version of Apple's Siri personal assistant has been accused of providing homophobic responses to questions about gay people.

The voice-activated helper responded to a question about whether gay marriage is "normal" by saying: "You are so rude" and "I consider this emotion should be considered negative."

When asked the same question again Siri said: "I will pretend I didn't hear that" and "Now you are using obscenities and then you are going to eat bread with the same hands."

It has been reported that the responses were due to a bug that has now been fixed.

Gay rights are a controversial subject in Russia. A law banning gay "propaganda" that was passed in 2013 prevents people from giving information about homosexuality to people under 18.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook came out as gay in October.

Last November, a tribute to Steve Jobs was removed from a college campus in St Petersburg after Mr Cook's announcement.

When the English version of Siri launched there were complaints about some its responses, which included refusing to look up the locations of local abortion clinics.

Sky News has contacted Apple for comment.

Islamic State Threatening Iraqi City Of Ramadi

Islamic State has captured three villages near the Iraqi provincial capital of Ramadi and is feared to be closing in on the city.

The militant group took the villages of Sjariyah, Albu-Ghanim and Soufiya, in Anbar province, which had been under government control, residents said.

It represents a setback for government forces, which two weeks ago were able to regain control of Tikrit.

Residents of the villages told the AP news agency fighting was taking place on the eastern edges of Ramadi, about 2km away from a local government building.

In Soufiya, the militants bombed a police station and took over a power plant.

The residents said Iraqi troops battling the militants were being backed up by airstrikes.

At around midday on Wednesday, militants opened another front with government troops at three other villages, to the northeast of Ramadi.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al Abadi is currently in Washington, where he has met President Barack Obama and appealed for greater support from the US-led coalition carrying out airstrikes against the militants.

At least 43 people have been killed in a spate of militant attacks in the last few days.

Iraqi state TV said troops have started a large-scale operation to recapture areas beyond Tikrit.

Islamic State swept through key areas in the north and west of Iraq last year seizing about a third of the country including Mosul.

The group has also previously captured large areas in neighbouring Syria and threatened the Kurdistani city of Irbil.

After its forces were ejected from Tikrit, Iraqi forensic teams exhumed the remains of up to 1,700 soldiers killed as militants overran the city.

Pro-Putin Biker Gang Spark Anger Over Ride

Pro-Putin Biker Gang Spark Anger Over Ride

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

A Russian biker gang loyal to President Vladimir Putin is planning to ride through Europe to mark the end of the Second World War, triggering anger in Poland.

Plans by the ultra-nationalistic Night Wolves motorcycle club to retrace the westward route taken by Soviet troops to Berlin have been branded a "provocation" by Warsaw.

The rally comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West over the crisis in Ukraine, which have fuelled fears of Moscow's wider territorial ambitions.

The two-week, 3,728 mile ride will pass through Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and finish in the German capital on 9 May.

The biker gang's website states "To Berlin" - a reference to the Red Army's famous battle cry.

Hundreds Of Migrants Feared Drowned Off Libya

Some 400 illegal migrants may have drowned when their boat capsized off the coast of Libya on Sunday, according to survivors who were rescued and brought to Italy.

Those rescued claimed the vessel was carrying between 500 and 550 people trying to make their way to Europe when it sank.

Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesman for the International Organisation for Migration, said between 144 and 150 survivors arrived on Tuesday at Reggio Calabria in southern Italy after being picked up by the Italian coastguard.

"We are continuing to investigate in order to understand how the shipwreck happened," he said.

There has been a suggestion the boat may have capsized after passengers began moving around when they saw the Italian rescue team approach.

The Italian coastguard says it has recovered nine bodies.

"There were 400 victims in this shipwreck, which occurred 24 hours after (their vessel) left the Libyan coast," the charity Save the Children said in a statement, citing survivors.

"There were several young males, probably minors, among the victims," the statement continued, adding there were also children among the survivors.

Speaking to Sky News, Save the Children spokeswoman Carlotta Bellini said: "The situation in Libya is really bad.

"Many migrants, including many children, have been victims of violence and many of them have reached Italy over the past few days.

"They have mentioned that extremism and violence on migrants is growing (in Italy).

"They are being transferred to a migrant centre in northern Italy."

Hundreds Of Pearl Harbor Dead To Be Exhumed

The remains of 388 Americans killed during the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor during World War Two are to be exhumed for DNA testing.

Most of the crew on board the torpedoed USS Oklahoma could not be identified after Japan's surprise attack - a pivotal moment which convinced the US to enter the war.

Their remains were interred at Hawaii's National Memorial Cemetery but now the Pentagon plans to transfer them to a Defense Department lab on the island to hopefully bring closure to some families.

Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work said the government remained "committed to fulfilling its sacred obligation to achieve the fullest possible accounting for US personnel lost in past conflicts".

"Recent advances in forensic science and technology, as well as family member assistance in providing genealogical information, have now made it possible to make individual identifications for many service members long-buried in graves marked 'unknown,'" said Mr Work.

"While not all families will receive an individual identification, we will strive to provide resolution to as many families as possible."

For the exhumation to happen, Government rules state there must be a chance of identifying at least 60% of the troops. Family members of the dead crew are set to provide samples to help the process.

Some 429 sailors and Marines on the USS Oklahoma died in the attack on 7 December 1941.

In all, Japan's two-hour airborne onslaught destroyed eight battleships and 164 planes - more than a 100 other vessels were also sunk or damaged.

But it was the deaths of more than 2,400 serviceman and civilians on home soil that truly shocked the US and led President Roosevelt to famously declare it "a day that will live in infamy".

Gravestone Of Hillary Clinton's Dad Toppled

By Sky News US Team

The gravestone of Hillary Clinton's father has been found toppled over at a Pennsylvania cemetery in what police believe is likely to be an act of vandalism.

Hugh Rodham's gravestone is at Washburn Street Cemetery in Scranton.

The stone was reported tipped over on Tuesday, two days after Mrs Clinton announced she was running for president.

Police Chief Carl Graziano told The Times-Tribune that it is unclear how the stone fell but he suspected vandals were responsible.

"I'm not sure how else it would have fallen over," he was quoted as saying.

According to the caretaker, the stone was intact on Friday.

There has been no public comment from Mrs Clinton, who had her first campaign event in Iowa on Tuesday.

Mr Rodham grew up in Scranton, a city about 120 miles north of Philadelphia.

He owned a small textiles business in Chicago, and died in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1993 at age 82.

Safe Sex Warning Over Ebola Virus In Semen

Traces of Ebola have been found in the semen of a man who had been given the all-clear six months earlier, according to the World Health Organisation.

The man, from Liberia, was declared free of the virus last September.

Ebola was previously detected in semen about three months after a patient was declared virus-free.

The Geneva-based UN health agency is urging survivors of the often deadly virus to practise safe sex "until further notice".

WHO spokesman Mr Jasarevic said the organisation would not be able to give more detailed advice until there was more research on the after-effects of the disease.

"We need to understand better if this particular case is an anomaly or if there really are groups of people who might (carry) parts of the Ebola virus longer," he said.

The WHO's Bruce Aylward says studies are being conducted and talks are under way about whether there should be systematic screening after three months of a patient's recovery to see how they are.

EU Charges Google With Abusing Market Position

The EU has formally charged Google with abusing its search market position in Europe, leaving it open to a fine of more than $6bn (£4bn).

The European Commission has been examining whether Google, which holds about 90% of the search market in Europe, has been illegally rigging its search results to favour its own services.

Tech rivals such as Microsoft, who urged the EU to bring the case, want more competition in areas like online maps, search and shopping.

EU competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager said Google has given "an unfair advantage to its own comparison shopping service".

Rivals object to the firm placing adverts for its Google Shopping service ahead of other links in relevant searches.

The EU has issued a statement of objections which Google has 10 weeks to respond to before action can be taken.

Ms Vestager said that a separate antitrust investigation has been ordered into Google's mobile operating system Android.

She said: "In the case of Google I am concerned that the company has given an unfair advantage to its own comparison shopping service, in breach of EU antitrust rules.

"Google now has the opportunity to convince the Commission to the contrary. However, if the investigation confirmed our concerns, Google would have to face the legal consequences and change the way it does business in Europe."

An internal Google memo informed staff that the company believes it has a "strong case". In a blog post the tech giant used a series of graphs to show that competition continues to thrive.

The company has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. It could face an eventual fine of up to 10% of its worldwide turnover, which reached $66bn (£44.7bn) in 2014.

The filing of charges may increase pressure on Google to settle, to avoid a potentially damaging case and massive fine resulting from the allegations.

Japan Scrambles Warplanes At Cold War Levels

Jet fighter scrambles by Japan have soared back to Cold War levels in the face of increased air incursions by neighbouring Russia and China.

Japanese warplanes were sent up 943 times in the year to March - a 16% increase on the previous year - according to the country's Self Defence Force (SDF).

This is the second highest number of intercept flights ever recorded over a 12-month period since records began in 1958 and only one less than a record 944 in 1984.

An SDF spokesman said: "It represents a sharp increase."

Although not a direct measure of Russian and Chinese military activity, the figures indicate an increase in operations by the two countries.

It reflects an increasingly assertive China which is hiking defence spending by more than 10% a year and a resurgent Russia in the wake of Moscow's annexation of Crimea last year.

Japan has also increased defence spending, although to a lesser extent, buying a range of new military hardware, including longer-range patrol aircraft, cargo jets, helicopter carriers and stealth fighters.

The military is also set to be boosted with plans by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to relax constitutional restrictions on the country's defence forces that will allow them to operate more freely overseas and increase cooperation with US forces.

Russian bombers and patrol planes often enter Japan's airspace close to Japan's northern Hokkaido island and close to four smaller islands which are claimed by both countries.

There was also an upturn in Russian reconnaissance flights close to Japan following a missile launch by North Korea last year and joint military exercises held by the US and South Korea around the same time.

Chinese fighter incursions are concentrated in the East China Sea, close to disputed uninhabited islands near Taiwan.

The SDF spokesman said an increased number of Chinese planes have flown through Japanese airspace into the Western Pacific over the last year.

Japan is not the only country contending with increased military activity by Moscow.

RAF Typhoon jets were scrambled this week after Russian military aircraft were identified flying close to UK airspace.

And warships from Russia's Northern Fleet entered the English Channel ahead of planned anti-aircraft and anti-submarine drills.

They are the latest in a series of similar incidents in recent months amid strained relations over Ukraine.

Assassination Plot DVD Ballooned To North Korea

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 08 April 2015 | 23.11

Thousands of DVDs of a Hollywood film about a plot to assassinate the North Korean leader have been sent into the country via helium balloon.

North Korean defector-turned-activist Lee Min-Bok said he had undertaken four launches since January, the last being on Saturday.

Each time, he tied bundles of The Interview DVD and anti-Pyongyang leaflets to the balloons, and then released them from the back of a lorry.

"I launched thousands of copies and about a million leaflets on Saturday, near the western part of the border," Mr Lee told AFP news agency.

Pyongyang has described the comedy about a fictional CIA plot to assassinate leader Kim Jong-Un, as a "wanton act of terror" .

Mr Lee carried out the launches secretly at night, in remote areas and, although he was watched by local police, he was not stopped.

"The police would have no right to stop me from doing this," Mr Lee said.

"I am always being tailed by police," he added.

South Korea has asked activists to avoid provoking its neighbour but insisted it cannot act against individuals who have the right to express themselves.

Its Unification Ministry said: "Our stance is that we continue to acknowledge the freedom of individuals to publicise their opinions."

North Korea has been more proactive.

Border guards tried to shoot down one balloon launch last October resulting in an exchange of heavy machine gun fire with guards on the South Korea side.

North Korea have threatened "merciless retaliatory strikes" and issued their own condemnatory statement through their state-run news agency.

"The South Korean puppet authorities are egging despicable confrontational villains on to flock to the areas along the Military Demarcation Line and scatter leaflets slandering the DPRK.

Prison Guards 'Staged Gladiator-Style Fight'

Prison guards allegedly created a "gladiator-like scenario" to let two handcuffed inmates fight before a corrections officer shot one dead and wounded the other.

The trainee officer at High Desert State Prison fired four shotgun blasts according to the lawsuit filed at a Nevada state court by the family of the dead prisoner, 28-year-old Carlos Manuel Perez Jr.

Lawyer Cal Potter, representing the family, claimed the shooting on 12 November was an execution.

He said guards had staged the fight by allowing two inmates to encounter each other in a shower hallway in administrative segregation (ad seg) - where prisoners are supposed to be kept apart for their safety.

"Officers know they will see a fight if they release ad seg inmates that are supposed to be in walk-alone status," he said.

"Defendants ... refused to intervene. On the contrary (they) created a gladiator-like scenario and allowed the inmates to fight."

The lawsuit names two corrections officers and a shooter, said to be a trainee, by their last names only.

It alleges wrongful death; excessive force; deliberate indifference to Perez's medical needs; negligent training and supervision; and intentional infliction of emotional distress. It seeks unspecified damages in excess of $30,000 (£20,000).

Perez was serving 18 months to four years for hitting a man in the head with a two-by-four piece of wood in downtown Las Vegas in 2012.

The Clark County coroner ruled his death a homicide, after finding he died of gunshot wounds to the head, neck, chest and arms.

The other inmate, Andrew Jay Arevalo, 24, survived with gunshot wounds to the face, according to his attorney, Alexis Plunkett. She said her client told her that he and Perez were handcuffed when they were shot.

Arevalo is serving two to six years in prison after being jailed in June 2013 for burglary.

Ms Plunkett said she planned to file an excessive force lawsuit over the coming weeks on Arevalo's behalf.

Mr Potter represents Perez's brother, Victor Perez, and mother, Myra Perez, both of Reno, and two children, aged 3 and 2.

The lawyer said Perez's family was given conflicting statements during initial meetings with prison administrators after his death, and were not told Perez had been shot.

"They were devastated three days later when they went to the mortuary and learned that Carlos had ... multiple gunshot wounds to his face and upper body," he said.

Deputy prisons chief Brian Connett has insisted the state Department of Corrections is a responsible steward of the safety and security of guards and inmates.

He has said the shooting came in response to two inmates fighting at the prison, which houses around 3,500 inmates. The three accused corrections officers remain on paid leave pending action by the attorney general.

Hundreds Of Flights Cancelled By France Strike

Hundreds of flights to and from Britain have been cancelled due to a strike by air traffic controllers in France.

No frills airline Ryanair said it had axed more than 250 services while British Airways has warned of significant delays for the next 48 hours.

Departure and arrivals boards at Heathrow suggested most European flights were either delayed or cancelled, affecting tens of thousands of passengers during the Easter break.

Easyjet has axed 160 flights, including 36 to and from the UK.

The airline said in a statement: "We can assure our passengers we are doing everything possible to limit the inconvenience of this strike on them."

British Airways said: "Unfortunately there will be some knock-on delays to other parts of our short-haul network as a result of the strike action, given how much airspace in Europe will be affected. We are sorry for any disruption to customers' travel plans."

Ryanair hit out at those on strike. In a statement the airline said: "It's grossly unfair that thousands of European travellers will once again have their travel plans disrupted by the selfish actions of a tiny number of French ATC workers."

Passengers voiced their frustration on Twitter:

John Reynolds tweeted "Another great example of @Ryanair customer service - they tell you at 5.30pm that your flight is cancelled then close all comms down!"

While Darren Sutton asked Ryanair via twitter "my flight today has been cancelled and nothing available until Monday. What do I do now I'm stuck in Spain with no money or hotel?"

The effects of the strike have been felt far beyond France. Dave Garwood tweeted "daughter stranded in Marrakesh as Ryanair flight cancelled".

The moves by airlines were a response to advice from the French aviation authority, the DGAC, which had urged companies to cut their flights to and from France by 40%.

Airlines have warned the action will have a knock-on effect for short and medium-haul flights across Europe, due to the large number of flights that normally use French airspace.

The strike has been called by France's largest Air Traffic Controllers union, the SNCTA, in a dispute over working conditions.

The union is planning further action on 16-18 April and 29 April to 2 May.

The SNCTA delayed a strike planned a strike for 25-27 March due to the Germanwings crash in the French Alps.

Amazon Founder To Launch Spaceship This Year

Amazon's billionaire founder Jeff Bezos is to launch a spaceship which could one day take passengers into Earth's orbit.

His space firm Blue Origin has finished testing the rocket engine which will power the New Shepard craft - and if the test flights are successful then it could be used to fly three people to a height of 62 miles.

The liquid-oxygen fuelled rocket will be attached to the main capsule for the maiden voyage later this year, which will take off from the company's Texas facility near Van Horn.

Dozens of unmanned flights are likely to take place before paying passengers would be allowed on board.

Tickets for future suborbital flights are not yet on sale, and Blue Origin has not released any pricing information.

It is likely to begin flying commercially within 10 years.

Meanwhile Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo will resume test flights later this year after a fatal accident in California in 2014.

Other companies such as SpaceX are skipping suborbital space flight - part-way around the world - in favour of developing programmes for full orbital flight.

White House System Hacked By Russians - Report

Russian hackers who compromised computers in the US State Department used the foothold to target the White House computer system, it is claimed.

Computer experts allegedly backed by the Russian government penetrated sensitive parts of the White House computer system, CNN and other US news networks cited senior officials as saying.

Information access reportedly included real-time non-public details of the president's schedule. The information is not classified but still highly sensitive.

The hackers routed their attacks through computers around the world to hide their origins, but investigators say tell-tale codes point to hackers working for the Russian government.

National Security Council spokesman Mark Stroh would not confirm the exact details of the case, but said "any such activity is something we take very seriously".

It is alleged that suspicious activity was noticed on the White House computer systems back in October.

One official was quoted by CNN as saying the Russian hackers have "owned" the State Department system for months despite efforts to lock them out.

The Obama administration admitted the State Department computer intrusion when it happened last year, but said it would not comment in detail on the new claims.

Last week Mr Obama signed an executive order approving the first sanctions programme against cyberattackers who pose a "significant threat" to American interests.

Two Israeli Soldiers Injured In Stabbing

Two Israeli soldiers have been injured in a stabbing near a settlement in the West Bank, with the attacker killed shortly afterwards, the Israeli army has said.

An army spokeswoman said: "There was a stabbing attack near Shilo junction. Two people were stabbed and taken to hospital. The terrorist was targeted and killed by IDF (Israel Defence Forces) forces."

The incident happened on route 60, the main road linking the cities of Ramallah and Nablus.

Military sources told AFP one of the soldiers was in a serious condition after being stabbed in the neck.

The other soldier was said to have suffered light to moderate injuries.

Emergency services confirmed paramedics were called to a report of a stabbing near the entrance to the Maale Levona settlement near Shilo.

A statement said: "Paramedics are transferring a young man of around 20 to (Jerusalem's) Shaarei Tzedek hospital in serious condition with a stab wound to his upper body."

Palestinian security sources said they have sent an ambulance to pick up the body of the attacker.

There was a similar wave of attacks in the West Bank and Jerusalem towards the end of last year, but the violence has mostly subsided.

Palestinians demand the West Bank, which was captured by Israel from Jordan in the 1967 war, as part of their future state and object to an Israeli presence there.

Soldiers and Jewish settlers are often targeted by militants.

Gas Chamber Views Trigger Le Pen Family Rift

The leader of France's far-right National Front party, Marine Le Pen, said she will "oppose" her father standing in upcoming elections, in a major party and family rift.

The row emerged after a series of controversial comments by Jean-Marie Le Pen, including over Nazi gas chambers.

Marine Le Pen said her father's position appeared to sit somewhere "between a scorched earth strategy and political suicide".

She added she would oppose him standing in December's regional polls at a party meeting taking place on 17 April.

Mr Le Pen, the founder of the FN, last week reiterated his belief that gas chambers were a mere "detail" of the Second World War.

This is an assertion he has made repeatedly over nearly three decades, earning convictions for hate speech along the way.

Speaking of her "deep sadness," his daughter said she would call a top brass meeting at the party "to discuss with him how to best protect the political interests of the National Front."

"His status of honorary president does not allow him to take the National Front hostage, to make such crass provocations that appear aimed at harming me but which unfortunately hit the entire movement, its officials, candidates, members and voters very hard," she said.

Since taking over the FN in 2011, Marine Le Pen has sought to make the party a more palatable alternative for mainstream voters.

The strategy helped lead the FN to first place in last year's European elections in France and a quarter of the votes in the first round of local polls last month.

Briton Held After Girl's Hong Kong Death Fall

The British father of a teenager in Hong Kong has been arrested after she plunged to her death from an upmarket apartment block.

Nick Cousins, and the girl's Filipina mother, were arrested on suspicion of "ill-treatment or neglect of a child or a young person".

Police emphasised that there was "no suspicious element" in the 15-year-old girl's fatal fall.

Mr Cousins, 58, is the managing director of the Hong Kong office of British multinational Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT), one of the world's leading insurance brokers.

The girl's mother is a 53-year-old Philippine national, the consulate in the Hong Kong said, adding that they were still ascertaining her identity.

She is reported to be a former domestic helper, according to local media.

Mr Cousins has been released on bail but the teenager's mother was still in police custody on Wednesday afternoon.

The 15-year-old plunged from the 21-storey apartment block in upmarket Repulse Bay in the early hours of Tuesday morning, police said.

The teenager's mother has also been accused of overstaying her visa, while Mr Cousins was accused of aiding or abetting the overstay.

The couple were not married, Hong Kong police said.

JLT confirmed Mr Cousins had lost his eldest daughter "in tragic circumstances".

"We are giving Nick our full support through this difficult time and he will be on extended compassionate leave until further notice," the statement said.

Police said that the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene after a security guard found her lying on the ground.

"It was suspected that the subject fell from a height," police said without confirming which floor.

"We learned that the subject was probably upset about some daily life issues," the spokesman said in an email to the AFP news agency.

Local media reported that she had locked herself in a bathroom before her death.

Residents of the Repulse Bay neighbourhood expressed their dismay.

"I was shocked because she (the teenager) would always say 'Hi' to me. She was friendly," a domestic helper said.

She was often in the complex's playroom or at the pool with her younger sister, said the helper.

Litvinenko Suspect: Death 'Suicide By Accident'

One of two ex-KGB agents suspected of using a radioactive poison to kill a former spy in London has said the victim may have accidentally poisoned himself.

Alexander Litvinenko died three weeks after after meeting the two agents at a London hotel on 1 November 2006.

Speaking at a Moscow news conference, Dmitry Kovtun said Mr Litvinenko may have already been contaminated before another meeting they had in October that year.

He suggested the former spy had accidentally poisoned himself, calling it a "suicide by accident".

"I am sure he was dealing with polonium without realising," Mr Kovtun said.

"Maybe at some point there was a leak of this polonium and it was gradually storing in his body. There were outbreaks, like on 16 October when he was vomiting."

Sky's Moscow Correspondent Katie Stallard said people would find the suggestion hard to believe, particularly considering the coincidence around the timing of it.

Police have said a "massive trail" of radiation followed Mr Kovtun and his co-accused, Andrei Lugovoi, across London.

Traces were found in each of the hotel rooms they stayed in, restaurants they visited and even on their plane seats back to Moscow.

The former KGB agent did not deny he and his colleague had met Mr Litvinenko on 16 October 2006 at Itsu restaurant in London, but said Mr Litvinenko had told them he was feeling unwell and had been sick the night before.

Mr Kovtun suggested he had been contaminated when the group shook hands.

An Afghan soldier was shot dead after opening fire on American troops - killing one and wounding seven others - in a failed assassination attempt on a senior US diplomat.

The attack took place after a meeting between Afghan provincial leaders and Donald Yamamoto in the compound of the provincial governor in Jalalabad.

According to sources, a convoy was leaving the compound when the Afghan soldier opened fire on the last car using a vehicle-mounted machine gun.

Mr Yamamoto, who was recently appointed as special advisor to Afghanistan, had already left the compound by this stage and was unharmed.

General Fazel Ahmad Sherzad, police chief for eastern Nangarhar province, said American troops immediately returned fire, killing the Afghan soldier.

The motive for the attack was not immediately known.

An Afghan interpreter working with the US troops had previously said no American soldiers had died in the incident.

It is the second insider attack in the country this year, after an Afghan soldier killed three American contractors on 29 January.

The Western-backed Afghan government's 13-year war against the insurgents has intensified as both sides seek to strengthen their positions ahead of possible peace talks.

'Cannibal Cop' Given Eight-Year Jail Sentence

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 01 April 2015 | 23.11

A German former policeman who murdered a man he met on a cannibalism fetish website has been sentenced to eight years and six months in jail.

Detlev Guenzel, 57, killed his willing victim before cutting the body into small pieces and burying them in the garden of his bed and breakfast guest house.

There was no evidence that he ate any part of Polish-born business consultant Wojciech Stempniewicz.

The crime took place at the defendant's home, a B&B inn in the mountain town of Hartmannsdorf-Reichenau near the Czech border, in November 2013.

The men had come across each other a month earlier on a website for slaughter and cannibalism fantasies which billed itself as the "#1 site for exotic meat" and boasted more than 3,000 members.

Former police forensic handwriting expert Guenzel, 57, went on trial in August last year.

Dresden chief prosecutor Andreas Feron told the trial: "He killed and dismembered him to get sexual stimulation."

Guenzel retracted a confession originally made to police in which he admitted killing Mr Stempniewicz by cutting his throat.

An autopsy determined that the cause of death was asphyxiation and it was alleged Guenzel took a knife, then an electrical saw, to Mr Stempniewicz's body.

The defence team argued that the victim, who had long expressed a death wish, hanged himself in Guenzel's custom-designed "S&M studio" in his cellar.

The men's email exchanges had the title "Schlachtfest", the German word for a country feast after the slaughter of a pig.

Defence lawyer Endrik Wilhelm told the trial in August: "In our eyes, and in the eyes of our client, it is about a suicide."

The defendant, who has children from the first of his two marriages, the second of which was to a man, sat impassively with arms folded as the verdict was read out.

Presiding judge at the sentencing at the regional court in the eastern city of Dresden Birgit Wiegand said: "He was found guilty of murder and disturbing the peace of the dead."

State prosecutors had wanted a jail sentence of 10-and-a-half years.

Lawyers representing the family of Mr Stempniewicz, 59, had requested a 15-year sentence, which is typically the maximum in a German murder case.

But prosecutors said they stopped short of this demand because he said he wanted to die.

Palestinian Man 'Tricked' Into Selling Banksy

A Palestinian man has said he has been tricked into selling a potentially valuable work by Banksy for just over £100.

Sky News reported that the British graffiti artist sneaked into Gaza and left behind four murals on destroyed buildings in February.

One of the artworks, titled Bomb Damage, showed Greek goddess Niobe on a door which was the last remaining part of a two-storey house belonging to the Dardouna family.

Unaware of the work's value, Rabie Dardouna said he was duped into selling the door to a local artist for just 700 shekels, or about £118.

Banksy's works have sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds.

"I did not know that it was this valuable. I heard it can be sold for millions," Mr Dardouna said. "Now I want the door back."

He added he did not know who the British artist was and initially did not pronounce Banksy's name correctly.

Dozens Killed In Yemen Factory Bombing

An explosion at a factory in western Yemen has killed up to 37 people, as Saudi-led air strikes continue on Shia rebels in the country.

A provincial governor said 80 others were injured at the dairy in Hodaida, a port city on Yemen's Red Sea coast.

It is not clear whether the factory was hit directly by an air strike, or the explosion was triggered by rockets fired from rebel bases at a nearby army camp.

Residents say the aerial bombardment began shortly after midnight on Wednesday, and led to the plant being largely destroyed.

Yemeni officials suspect the factory may have been being used to store rebel weapons, according to sources quoted by the Associated Press.

The incident appears to be one of the biggest instances of civilian deaths since Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region began a military campaign against Houthi rebels loyal to Yemen's former leader Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The Saudis and their allies are seeking the reinstatement of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who fled the country last week after being displaced by the rebels.

The Houthis began their offensive in September, seizing the capital Sanaa, and placing President Hadi under house arrest.

Violence has also continued in the southern city of Aden, with gunfire and several loud explosions heard throughout the night.

London Mafia Mobster's Sentence 'Extinguished'

A mafia gangster who was due to be extradited to Italy from the UK has been told he no longer has to serve his sentence.

Domenico Rancadore, known as "The Professor", hid out in Britain for more than 20 years until he was discovered living in west London in 2013.

Italian authorities wanted the 65-year-old returned to his native country because they said should spend time in jail for being head of an organised crime group.

He lost his battle against extradition in February but it emerged on Wednesday that the punishment he was due to serve has been "extinguished" since last October.

His solicitor Karen Todner said: "Domenico Rancadore's sentence in Italy extinguished due to age of conviction.

"I have sent a consent order for the discharge of Rancadore to the Crown Prosecution Service to sign."

Before his arrest, Rancadore was living in Uxbridge with his family under the name Marc Skinner.

After a year-and-a-half long extradition battle, the Sicilian was told he must return to Italy to serve his seven-year sentence.

He was never convicted of murder but was tried in his absence in 1999 for "association with the Mafia" because he was a member of the Cosa Nostra.

The mobster claimed he came to England out of fear in 1995 as he wanted to give his "children a good life" and that he felt "their life wasn't secure" in Italy.

He was first arrested on a European arrest warrant at his semi-detached London home in August 2013.

His lawyers initially defeated an attempt to extradite him on human rights grounds in March 2014 but they failed at a second attempt this year.

It is understood that under Italian law, although a conviction stands, a sentence expires once a period of more than double the time of the penalty has passed.

With a seven-year sentence, the 14-year period would have elapsed some time last year.

Video Captures Final Moments Of Alps Crash

Mobile phone footage taken from inside the Germanwings flight during its final moments has reportedly been recovered from the crash site in the French Alps.

European newspapers Paris Match and Bild have reported that the video, which Sky News has not seen, was discovered on a mobile phone found among the wreckage of flight 4U 9525.

Paris Match, which has not published the video, reported: "The scene was so chaotic that it was hard to identify people, but the sounds of the screaming passengers made it perfectly clear that they were aware of what was about to happen to them.

"One can hear cries of 'My God' in several languages."

The newspaper added that metallic banging can be heard in the footage, before the screaming gets louder and the video ends.

A lead investigator into the crash later called on anyone with footage of the disaster to hand it over to authorities.

Prosecutor Brice Robin said videos were not yet an official part of the probe, but that anyone with footage "must hand it over immediately to investigators".

It comes after Lufthansa revealed the co-pilot accused of deliberately crashing the Germanwings plane told officials at a training school he had gone through an "episode of severe depression".

Andreas Lubitz, 27, informed instructors in 2009 that he had to break off from his pilot training for several months because of his illness.

China's Warning On Deadlocked Iran Talks

China has called for both sides to compromise in nuclear talks between Iran and world powers, warning that all previous efforts will be wasted if a deadlock continues.

Negotiations have resumed in Lausanne, Switzerland, hours after midnight deadline passed without any definitive agreement being reached, although negotiators agreed to a one-day extension.

But after Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi left the meeting, a rare statement from his delegation said: "It is important to give political guidance to the negotiations ... it is important to narrow down the differences.

"If the negotiations are stuck, all previous efforts will be wasted.

"All parties must be prepared to meet each other half way to reach an agreement."

Mr Wang was one of three foreign ministers to leave the negotiations in the hands of representatives, with Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and France's Laurent Fabius also departing.

The significance of their absence was not clear.

Iran's foreign minister said earlier he was hopeful Tehran and the six world powers - the US, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China - could begin drafting a preliminary deal after the negotiations were extended.

Mohammad Javad Zarif described the late-night talks as "very good", saying: "We hope to start drafting the text on Wednesday."

Britain's Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said: "We have made some very significant progress over the last few days, but it has been slow going.

"We decided to break last night. Some of the staff had been working through the previous night. We wanted people to be fresh as we started the last few issues that remain.

"We are now working on them this morning. I'm optimistic that we will make further progress this morning, but it does mean the Iranians being willing to meet us where there are issues that we still need to deal with.

"So fingers crossed and we hope to get there during the course of the day."

Western powers aim to stop Iran from having the capacity to develop a nuclear bomb, in exchange for easing international sanctions that are crippling its economy.

Stumbling blocks related to Iran's enrichment research and the speed of lifting the sanctions are threatening to scupper an agreement.

The aim is to reach an understanding that could serve as the basis for a final accord to be reached by the end of June.

The talks, which have lasted nearly two years, have already been extended twice since an interim agreement was reached in November 2013.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who opposes the negotiations, said the agreement being put together in Lausanne sends the message "that Iran stands to gain by its aggression".
