A British-born stormchaser has filmed remarkable footage of the moment a swirling supercell formed in the skies above Wyoming.
Meteorologist Dave Holder was leading an extreme weather tour through an area known as Thunder Basin when he saw the dramatic cloud formation taking shape.
His storm-chasing team, Basehunters, shared the time lapse video on its Facebook page, describing the supercell as "epic".
The full two-minute film has been viewed more than nine million times on YouTube.
According to the National Weather Service, supercells are among the most violent of all thunderstorms and can produce "damaging winds, large hail and weak-to-violent tornadoes".
They form in humid conditions when warm and cool air tumble over each other, and can be up to 25 miles wide.
