An arctic blast that has sent temperatures plummeting to record-breaking levels across much of the United States has begun to ease.
The polar vortex that started in the Midwest and spread to the East and South, affecting more than half the US population, is shifting northwards.
States will start to thaw as it surges across the Atlantic, leaving behind warmer temperatures and calmer winds.
Temperatures fell to -24C in Chicago, Illinois. Pic: Hank Cain However, a so-called "hard freeze warning" for cold temperatures that are dangerous to both people and pets remains in place for parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
The crippling cold left at least 21 people dead, including seven in Illinois and six in Indiana.
Several victims were homeless people who either refused shelter or were unable to find temporary accommodation quickly enough.
New Yorkers wrapped up as temperatures fell to -14C (6.8F) In Embarrass, Minnesota, temperatures dropped to as low as -37C (-35F), while in Chicago, Illinois, the mercury fell to -24C (-11.2F).
Fountains froze over in Atlanta, Georgia, and residents of New York City shivered in lows of -14C (6.8F).
One street cleaner in New York said: "It's brutal out here. Your fingers freeze off after three minutes, your cheeks feel as if you're going to get windburn and you work as quick as you can."

More than 500 Amtrak passengers were stranded overnight on three Chicago-bound trains that were stopped by blowing and drifting snow in Illinois.
More than 11,000 flights were cancelled as airlines struggled to load baggage onto planes and refuel aircraft.
Meanwhile, many schools and day care centres across the eastern half of the US were forced to close.
More than 60 million people in the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest and South were asked to conserve electricity, although there were no reports of widespread power outages.
